Toyota Prius Prime – Even if you’re not a Prius geek, you know there’s something different about the Prime Advanced Edition. Sure, the look is familiar and it gets exceptional fuel economy, but there’s something more aggressive about it. It’s built more aggressively… and more aggressively efficient. It’s just more aggressively priced.
I don’t know if you can tell, but the Prius Prime has a more aggressive face and an overall futuristic look. The lower section with vertical headlights and molded trim could have come from a sports car. At the top, four LED projector lamps on each side blink and blink. The side profile is pure Prius, but the tailgate – made from carbon fiber reinforced polymer – features a double bubble effect and unique LED taillights.

I’ve driven all Prius models since the model was born and this is my favorite interior. A large digital instrument display under the windshield is a Prius hallmark, but the center controls are dominated by vertical, almost Tesla-like, HD touchscreens for audio, climate control and navigation. It’s a little clunky to use, but you’ll get the hang of it quickly with pinch, zoom, tap and swipe functionality. Drivers also get a head-up display for speed, navigation instructions and energy consumption.

Heated leather seats, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel and automatic climate control add to the comfort – as does a JBL audio system. That vaulted roof creates a spacious cabin, but rear seat passengers are separated by a battery tunnel, so two are enough. Open the large hatch and fold down the rear seats for plenty of storage space. Safety is enhanced by forward collision with pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, blind spot warning, rear cross lane detection, radar adaptive cruise control and rear camera systems.
Driving this show of technology is an efficient 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, electric motors and a rear-mounted lithium-ion battery. In total, the system produces 121 horsepower—enough to move a Prius, but not enough to race a Corolla. But that’s not why anyone buys a Prius. The Prime will travel 25 miles on electricity before the gas engine extends the range—up to a total of 640 miles. Charging takes about 5.5 hours on domestic power or less than 2.5 hours on 240V chargers. Best of all, the car gets 55/53-MPG city/highway as a hybrid, or 133-MPGe as an EV. Those are pretty decent numbers.
Drivers can also choose how to use the available energy using three buttons below the large screen. Medium switches the vehicle between normal hybrid gas/electric mode and pure EV mode, which remains active until 84 mph or when it runs out of juice. On the right is the “Auto EV” mode, which supports pure electric driving but mostly boosts the gas engine during acceleration. On the left is a button that switches the throttle almost imperceptibly from normal to aggressive in “ECO” mode.
This is the best driving Prius ever. The four-wheel independent suspension and improved steering feel allow you to corner with confidence, although the lack of power quickly kills the fun if top speed is what you’re after. When driving, the car handles smoothly and easily keeps up with traffic. It’s not all paradise. A Prius is still a Prius. The style is popular, but not everyone has an idea about sports. It always felt a bit like a giant video game to me. The plastic in the dashboard will also come to pieces and you will place the batteries in the back seat. If you like it at the end of the day, put it in your garage.

Twenty years later, Price is still a vision of the future. It looks, rides and charges like a ride from the next decade. But it’s here today with a base price of $27, $100 or $33,985 as-tested, pitting the Prius Prime against the likes of the Chevy Volt, Hyundai Ioniq, Kia Nero and Ford Fusion Energi.

Toyota Prius Prime: Check Out The New Plug In Hybrid
15 years ago, Lexus starred in the movie “Minority Report” with Tom Cruise in a bright red concept called 2054. Today, Lexus offers a production car that is just as cool as the concept.
It’s not a Prius, but it’s a hybrid for families and those with a big party. I’ve long argued that the Toyota Prius is the best car for most people. With a base price under $29,000, comfortable seating for four, a spacious cargo area that includes seats that fold down for increased utility, available all-wheel drive, a reputation for reliability, and a history-proven bump. A favorable classification for is a Wise Choice. Oh, and it gets great gas mileage too.
As I see it, the problem with the Prius has always been a lack of style and fun to drive. But with the redesigned 2023 Toyota Prius, the automaker is adding a bit of both. And this is especially true of the 2023 Prius Prime, a plug-in hybrid version of the car with 220 horsepower.
Toyota estimates that the Prius Prime will go 39 to 44 miles on a full battery charge, meaning people on short trips can get around primarily on electricity. On longer trips, the gasoline engine kicks in, allowing the Prius Prime to exceed its electric-only range. On this run, the Prius Prime gets an estimated 48 to 52 mpg combined as a hybrid. The lower range and mileage figures are for the XSE and XSE Premium trim levels due to their larger 19-inch wheels.

Additionally, Toyota estimates that the Prius Prime will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds. That’s good by modern standards – and downright quick for a Prius. That “athletic side,” as Toyota puts it, is likely what the automaker is selling in the Prime in its traditionally sporty trim levels: SE, XSE, and XSE Premium.
This year, prices for the 2023 Toyota Prius Prime range from the low $30,000s to the low $40,000s, including a destination charge to ship the car from the factory in Aichi, Japan to your local dealer.
For this Prius Prime review, I tested the XSE in Southern California. It had a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an upgraded fixed glass roof, all-weather floor mats and a carpeted cargo area. These options bring the manufacturer’s suggested retail price to $38,729, including a $1,095 destination charge. Toyota provided the vehicle for this review, a Prius Prime.
Although the redesigned 2023 Prius sticks to the five-door hatchback look it’s worn for two decades, I think the fifth-generation model oozes elegance and artistry—something the previous models had in store. The lighting elements, design details and proportions reflect a new level of sophistication, and I think the available 19-inch alloy wheels are really stylish.

The standard Prius and Prime look nearly identical, with only minor differences, such as the Prime’s available solar-charging roof, which includes embedded solar panels hidden beneath a glossy finish. The solar roof helps recharge the battery while the vehicle is stationary and power the air conditioner and other accessories while driving. It is optional with the XSE Premium trim.
Inside, the Prius and Prime boast a new interior with advanced technology and on-screen graphics. Additionally, the car’s cabin has a fairly traditional layout of controls, placing the digital instruments in front of the driver rather than in the center of the dash as in past Prius models. The dashboard appears to float in a continuous arc that winds under the windshield from the house to the door.
Although the interior looks nice, it is small inside. But when you compare the specs to the previous generation model, the Prime cabin is about the same size and has slightly more cargo space.
All Prius Primes have single-zone automatic climate control and a heated steering wheel. With the SE trim, the car gets fabric upholstery and front seats with manual height adjustment. The Prius Prime XSE adds an eight-way power controller.
