Porsche Macan Gts – On the face of it (both literally and figuratively), the latest Porsche Macan looks like a tough sell. This is a model that was launched in 2014, don’t forget, which has kept it alive in the current automotive landscape. We already know that a bold electric alternative is in the works, and given the precedent set by the Taycan, it’s not hard to imagine that many people are waiting for a version of Porsche’s smallest SUV. . Add to that, it might not be the most sympathetic lift a producer has ever taken. As for the GTS seen here, almost all of the front end is black (lower models get more body paint), which looks a little heavy to these eyes. The large backup camera displayed above the number plate doesn’t help the situation, and the gap that opens reveals the radiation you’re hiding.
However, there are many very good Porsches yet to be seen. And there are a few key reasons why the Macan can appeal in its volume, too. The turbo has been dropped for this update, but the GTS gets a power boost to compensate, namely the full 440hp of the previous flagship with the most focused Macan chassis on offer. Given the car’s praise for its handling over the past few years, this unprecedented combination looks promising.

Let’s not forget the new interior either. We all know that there’s nothing about a car like its driving environment, and for the Macan it’s something else. Now look at the start and it’s a mess of buttons, switches, dials and knobs. Not a useful number to complement the useful touchscreen, but a flurry of appropriate touch points. Blank switches and some subpar plastics don’t help the first impression. Of course it improves with time, but it definitely takes some getting used to.

There is a notable improvement inside this updated cabin. Larger displays have been around for a while, but the quality of Porsche’s latest touchscreen means the most important buttons below, which help reduce that limitation. For the rest, the Panamera-style glass arrangement is also successful, removing the unsightly blank switch and allowing for more storage. Haptic feedback is also responsive. The 911-like knurled exhaust controls are also more satisfying to use than the old system. All this, while also keeping the analog instrument dials – hurrah.
It brings really nice interior improvements, a noticeable improvement in the cabin that wasn’t great before, especially for the well-adjusted driving position. Some may be upset that PDK’s manual mode now requires pressing a button on the wheel instead of flicking a gear but honestly, that’s about it (since red air vents are optional, don’t worry). Anyone deciding between it and the Stelvio Quadrifoglio will be very disappointed with Alfa if they come second.
Since the internal combustion engine is not long for a mechanic, its presence is very much felt in this last model. The 2.9-litre twin-turbo engine has always been a Porsche, torquey but deep, responsive but also with a strong edge. It was nice to experience it again, for what might be the last time. It’s ready from just above idle, but really comes into its stride from just over 2,000rpm; Maximum power is available at 5,700 but is maintained at 6,700 rpm, so while it doesn’t explode with the limiter like the Stelvio, there’s certainly an appetite for revs.
The way it stutters and rumbles up to 7,000rpm is more exciting than the 911’s turbocharged flat-six, though it might just be a fear of talking with battery power. The dual-clutch PDK is, as always, the perfect partner for the V6, surpassing the automatics found in Audis because it doesn’t sacrifice smoothness for quick and responsive shifts. For what it’s worth, Porsche says this Macan GTS, with Sport Chrono, will do 0-62 mph in 4.3 seconds and 0-99 mph in 10.5 seconds, before hitting 169 mph. (160 km per hour) You won’t feel the need to go fast.

Porsche has also tinkered under the GTS, with a standard sports air suspension that’s lower and stiffer than before. Which, frankly, doesn’t seem like a smart move, especially without the 21-inch wheels that fit this car. It’s only when you look at the reality, you see the ‘no-cost option instead of the GTS Sports Air Suspension (-10mm)’ and you realize that Porsche probably thinks the same. There must be a better compromise. If not as plush as the F-Pace or supple as the Stelvio, the Macan is still plenty comfortable in everyday situations. In fact, as with the Porsche’s adjustable suspension, the comfort setting works as a nice catch-all for all conditions. The sport is just there to tighten things up a bit, stretch the dampers and add more power without compromising the ride, but it doesn’t seem worth it as a mild setting will do just fine. Possibly Sport Plus is busy and not really useful on the road.
The Macan is a wonderful prospect because it drives the best way of all cars – that is, complacent and in a way that feels harmonious no matter the speed. There is no dynamic factor as they all work in harmony with others. The steering is better than many sports cars, with near-perfect feel and response, the four-wheel drive always puts power in the right places to make it feel nimble, and the brakes produce excellent, confident driving. And the car was definitely collected.
Perhaps not quite as striking as the GTS Stelvio, though it’s still plenty of fun in a more subtle way. Crucially, it’s even better than before: the chassis is busier than the Turbo’s shown below, with power and torque that offer a new (rather than compromised) pleasure. Both the GTS and Turbo are good at first, no doubt, but this feels like the best Macan to drive.
Which, combined with internal (if not external) improvements, ensures the Macan will leave production as competitive as it was at launch. Maybe more than that. Familiar cues remain – it’s almost the world’s most versatile SUV, and the £85k as-tested price is staggering – but it would be hard to expect significant facelifts from the previous model year. Macan’s aggressive stance could help take some of the sting out of that initial asking price. And no matter how capable the next Macan is, there will be few that offer a more complete SUV package. A Stelvio Quadrifoglio is still a very interesting choice for drivers, but in this iteration the Macan GTS is more comprehensive than ever. Just might be black.
