Mercedes Benz G Class: From Off Roader To Luxury Suv
First developed for military use at the suggestion of the Shah of Iran, this body-on-frame SUV has been around for decades. Its rugged appeal attracts affluent customers who want something a little different from your average luxury SUV.

When it comes to SUVs, modern car dealerships are stacked with countless models from all manufacturers. More new SUVs are sold in Australia each year than any other type of vehicle.
Yet there are only two icons that can lay claim to the fact that SUVs were a mainstay of pop culture and the primary choice for everyone from families to the social elite – the Land Rover Defender and the Mercedes-Benz G-Class (or G) as the Germans calling it Wagon).
More Than Meets The Eye: Updated 2024 Mercedes G Class Revealed
While Land Rover has brought a new Defender to life, bringing powerful and capable models into the modern era, the car remains a cheap option for those who want to be more mainstream.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen, on the other hand, is the equivalent of a Birkin bag on wheels. It exists because it is a visual representation of its owner’s desire to be different.
It doesn’t matter how capable or good it is at doing the things it’s designed to do, the important thing is that it’s a G-Wagen and all you have to do is open and close the doors to realize how stupid it really is easy to fall in love.
If you’re wondering why the G-Wagen is an icon, it’s important to look a little deeper into the model’s history. In the same way that the much-loved Volkswagen Beetle was the brainchild of a German dictator (you know) and Ferdinand Porsche, the G-Wagen first came to mind of another dictator.
Wald Makes The Old Mercedes Benz G Class Look Like The New Amg G63
Long before the religious revolution in Iran, the Middle Eastern nation’s shah (king) owned about 25 percent of Mercedes-Benz’s parent company, Daimler-Benz. As you can imagine for a king, he doesn’t like getting around in a jeep, so he asked the German company to build a military-style car fit for a king, and Daimler’s board agreed.
The project was designed and approved by the Shah of Iran and Mercedes-Benz handed over production to the Austrian company ‘Steyr-Daimler-Puch’ – now known as Magna-Stair since its acquisition by Magna International in 2001 – where it is still being manufactured.
The first generation debuted in 1979, the same year the king saw a little less life with the Iranian revolution, meaning he never got to enjoy his G Wagon. Thanks to the rest of us, the G Wagon has become the anti-hero of today’s SUV. This is the ultimate “bad” SUV.
With black paint options, super dark tinted windows and a red leather interior, there’s no more iconic car to go by. Any way you look at it, since its inception in the 70s, this Austrian-built, German-owned and Iranian-inspired vehicle has possessed an undeniable level of excellence and charm that has been the envy of all SUVs for almost 40 years. manufacturer

Let’s be real, that envy and that lust is really for the fire-breathing twin-turbo V8 Mercedes-AMG G63. Does the diesel G400d have the same appeal and if not, does it offer appeal in different ways to justify its existence?
The G400d is a more sensible choice for those likely to do long-distance driving and appreciate the incredible torque, reliability and durability of a Mercedes-Benz diesel engine. Unlike its city-dwelling G63 sibling, the G400d should appeal to those considering taking their very expensive G Wagon off-road and often on rough and unpaved roads.
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz G400d retails for $233,900 before on-road costs and is on sale now. That puts it $56,000 below the bi-turbo V8-powered Mercedes-AMG G63 which starts at $289,900 plus on-road.
Realistically, the G400d will cost around $250-260k if you don’t go too crazy with the options, while the AMG G63 (if you can even get one) is now in the $320-330k range.
Mercedes Benz G Class Review & Prices 2024
That might sound expensive – and it is – but if you look a little closer, the G400d costs $17,799 GST and $37,990 LCT, while the G63 fetches $22,351 GST and $53,013 LCT.
The price does not include stamp duty which is an additional $26,000 on the G63 in states such as Victoria.
In addition to G-Wagen ownership status, the G400d comes with a full list of standard features, including:
But it misses out on features we found extremely useful in the G-Wagen, like a head-up display and keyless entry.

Now, if you’ve never opened a G-Wagen door, you’ll probably find it useful to know that it’s not like your average modern car door. It’s an old fashioned push button door handle which means you have to push a button and hold the handle to open it – but that shouldn’t limit its ability to do proximity unlocking, which would be very useful.
If you have small children, they will likely struggle to open or close large, heavy doors. The force required to properly close the door sounds pretty loud, but car enthusiasts around the world recognize the sound of a G-Wagen door closing as one of the most satisfying car sounds around.
It scored 90 percent for protection of adult passengers, 85 percent for protection of children, 78 percent for protection of vulnerable road users and 73 percent for safety assistance.
We’d never spec a black-on-black G-Wagen, especially given the option of a two-tone nappa leather, classic red pattern, or if you’re a little more conservative, the almond brown leather and macchiato beige options are stunning.

That being said, if a black interior can look this good, you know you have a great base to work with.
The G-Wagen isn’t the latest in Mercedes-Benz interior technology, and the old COMAND infotainment system feels a bit dated even compared to the MBUX interface found on the entry-level A-Class. Not having things like wireless Apple CarPlay is a bit annoying, but the 590W Burmester sound system makes up for it.
We found the front seats to be very comfortable and perfect for the type of car the G400d is. It’s an ideal place for long distance drives and this car can get off the bitumen, understandably so.
The second row is as comfortable as the front but not when you have three up. Ideally, it’s a four-seater, unless it’s for short runs.

The boot isn’t exactly huge either, measuring just 454L (VDA). Although it will fit things including large prams or a month’s worth of groceries before you start feeling cramped.
The Mercedes-Benz G400d is powered by a 3.0-litre turbodiesel inline-six producing 243kW of power and 700Nm of torque, mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox.
The G400d uses a claimed 9.5 liters of diesel per 100km, which may sound like a lot but when you consider the car weighs 2489kg (carb). We managed around 10.6L/100km during our test, but we didn’t exactly drive it economically either.
It’s easy to dismiss the G400d as a “poor man’s G-Wagen,” but the 3.0-liter “OM656” diesel engine is actually the most powerful diesel engine German company Daimler has produced this side of a truck.

As such, it offers decent acceleration, reaching 0-100 km/h in just 6.4 seconds, which is as quick, if not faster, than most modern hot-hatches.
