If you’ve driven in one of Mercedes’ many SUVs, the EQC will feel very similar, except for the silent powertrain. Because it is. With its first mainstream EV, Mercedes didn’t reinvent the car. He simply put the electricity in the car. Specifically, the GLC.

Remove the internal combustion engine, exhaust and fuel tank and gearbox. Install two drive motors, one in the front and one in the back, and an underground battery. That’s the basic concept anyway (and protected away from creations like the EQE SUV), but of course thousands of details have changed, and there’s a new, more permanent design with a slightly futuristic exterior and interior of the EQC.

Both outside and inside, the EQC has very similar dimensions to the GLC. It doesn’t have a spacious front cabinet design or a lightweight aluminum body. You don’t need to practice and you won’t look like you’re driving a science experiment.
It might seem a shame that Mercedes would adapt an existing platform instead of building a new one, but at least they paid attention to the details of the bodywork, engines, thermal systems and electronics. The goals – which we successfully achieved in our first experience – were peace of mind, efficiency and safety.
Although the EQC was among the first wave of luxury electric crossovers to arrive in 2019, it actually now lags behind its facelifted GLC sibling in terms of interior technology and design.
It’s also quite small compared to its direct competition. The Jaguar I-Pace has a similar footprint but has a longer wheelbase for more cabin space. The original Audi e-tron is huge, and the Tesla Model X (now left-hand drive) is even bigger. However, the Mercedes is the heaviest, weighing two and a half tons.

Here is the reason. The EQC has the same suspension and large undercarriage as the GLC. To ensure that it behaves in a protective manner in the event of a crash, it has steel-tube analogs of an internal combustion car engine and transmission housing, except that it is often sealed with fresh air rather than pistons and gears. So you won’t find the airy cabin or flat floor of a Tesla or Jaguar.
The EQC’s chief engineer is happy to admit that because it’s custom-built, it’s 150kg heavier than it would be if it were fully custom-built (though somehow the new EQE weighed 2.6 tonnes, despite sitting on established EV platforms). He says weight doesn’t affect range too much because you can get a lot of regeneration out of a heavy car – here up to 240bhp back to the battery. Instead, low resistance is important and the EQC achieves a Cd of just 0.28.
It is also a car that can withstand a small capacity, as the battery is not very powerful at 80kWh gross. Mercedes cares a lot about safety, so they made the EQC’s battery smaller than its competitors. It doesn’t extend straight to the door pillars, but instead has 10 inches of extra shock absorbing structure on both sides. The range is 259 kilometers WLTP, depending on the wheels (there are low power ones available) and the non-standard running boards (which actually make things better).
Great question. The EQC has been on sale for a while now, and in mid-2023 prices will start at £74,330, with a monthly offer of around £649 a month. There’s one powertrain and battery option, and in the UK there’s a choice of three different trim levels – all of which fit the AMG Line styling package with varying levels of extra technology and leather.

Mercedes was very careful with its first electric car, that is, with its first conventional car, which – the SLS Electric Drive could not be considered conventional or conservative. Using a modified platform, the GLC doesn’t get the dynamic styling, spaciousness or cabin space you’d expect from an EV SUV. And even the EQC is not easy to drive, despite the presence of 400 hp.
But the details of its refined drivetrain and chassis make this car a relaxing car to drive or drive. And Merc has done everything it can to ease the transition to getting power from electric packs rather than gas stations. It already looks old, especially in the driver’s seat, but some will prefer it to the Hyperscreens and the “automatic driving” that was tied up a few years after the arrival of the EQC.
In 2023, there will probably be better options at this price, but for those who want as “normal” an electric car as possible, the EQC will still have some appeal.

For a company that built its reputation on technological innovation, Mercedes has been unusually slow to introduce a mass-produced electric car.
Now that the Mercedes EQC crossover SUV is here and finally here, I couldn’t have chosen a better place for the global public launch than Oslo to highlight how long it’s been taking. Here, every other car you see is gas. If London were the same, you’d have to take turns boiling the kettle with your neighbors on a weekday evening after everyone else in the city got home and plugged in.

Because Mercedes is, of course, the oldest name in the automotive industry and still the most respected around the world, and now it’s the best-selling car brand in the world – it’s still a big deal whenever it happens.
First of all. For accuracy, it would be better to write ‘first’ in quotation marks; there are already a few electric cars from Smart and the electric Mercedes-Benz A-Class called the E-Cell that was “sold” at very low prices a decade ago.

Like Mercedes – it is closely related to Mercedes-Benz GLC and you can see the similarities. But it also looks like a typical mid-size SUV that could, to these eyes at least, have been designed by Renault or Hyundai – or even Saab.
Mercedes Tries To Catch Up To Tesla With Its All Electric Eqc Suv
Is this a problem, I wonder, in a market where design can be an important selling point? It can be; or perhaps our current perception. Either way, if people look at the EQC and don’t see it as a Mercedes until they get close enough to see the star on the grille, as I fear they might, it makes you wonder if it’s really going to live up to its potential. . We will see.
At face value, the EQC is a mid-size SUV and is almost 100mm longer than the Mercedes GLC, although it still only seats five. With slightly different electric motors mounted on each axle, the car has all-wheel drive with electronic torque vectoring. The front motor has a less tightly wound stator for better performance, while the rear motor is more rigid for more torque. When driving, the EQC is powered by the front engine only.
But dig deep into the gas pedal and the car’s thrust quickly shifts to the rear axle with a total output of up to 402bhp and 564lb ft. That’s significantly more torque than the Jaguar I-Pace or Audi E-tron offer, although the former is still faster than the Mercedes, according to the manufacturer’s claims.
When compared directly to these two main competitors, there is a lot to be judged about this car. EQC splits the difference between the two in length and total value. With an 80kWh battery, it has the smallest usable battery capacity of the three – yet it beats the bigger, heavier Audi for WLTP tested battery range (259 to 249 miles).

On the inside, the car is much easier to recognize as a modern Mercedes than on the outside. The EQC’s cabin features dual wide digital screens and a push-button steering wheel that feature many modern Benz vehicles, but is mixed with new design details, some new ambient lighting features, some EV-specific display modes, and new cabin materials. Our test car had speaker grills and stylized air vents, which I liked, and a soft and attractive synthetic dashboard, the look of which I can’t risk under the price if I describe it as if it were made from recycled neoprene clothing. .
