The project began six months ago as a hobby for Jürgen Eberle, a vehicle development engineer for the E-Class, who wanted to build something that would give some credibility to the All Terrain name. Initially the ground clearance was increased by 40 millimeters and a cladding was added to the body, but Eberle decided to go one step further and installed portal axles from the G-Class 4×4².

During this time the workload increased considerably and Eberle realized that he could not do all the work alone. He called some colleagues, asked the person responsible for him for a small quote and finally the E-Class All Terrain 4×4² was born.

It certainly wouldn’t look out of place on a Mad Max film set, with a 200mm wide track and carbon fiber wheel arch extensions. The Go Anywhere, Do Anything vehicle also runs. This isn’t surprising considering ground clearance has almost tripled, measuring just over 400mm compared to the standard E-Class All Terrain’s 160mm.

Once you get in and slide into the ventilated and massaged leather seats, the Bigfoot Benz feels like any other E-Class with all the usual amenities, from the gorgeous 12.3-inch screens to the aluminum and leather-trimmed cabin.

And where the pavement ends, the fun begins. Where every other off-roader in the E-Class catches up, and even the G-Class has to struggle, the 4×4² makes slow progress. It is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and although it is the only All Terrain not equipped with a diesel engine, there is certainly no shortage of torque as the engine takes you smoothly and comfortably over rugged terrain.

As the 4×4² lacks mechanical differential locks and a low-range gearbox, there is a limit to how far the E-Class can go off-road, meaning it’s not as capable as some of the more serious off-road machines.

The 4×4² has gone down so well with Mercedes bosses that the German brand is now considering selling a smaller number of models. Eberle claims that it is technically possible to build a small series and the response from the different markets that have already seen the vehicle has been clearly overwhelming. Watch this space. Mercenary engineer and off-road enthusiast Jürgen Eberle’s giant E-AT² (I just made up that acronym, but it looks like a Star Wars droid, so I’ll keep it) basically looks like this: the E400 E-Class. -Terrain, its suspension Redesigned to accommodate a set of portals.

Now, a portal axle is a serious and expensive piece of off-road kit that suspends the gear set in a hub that attaches to the wheel. The wheels are cut from an R-Class SUV… and shod in 285/50/R20, which means that when combined with the All-Terrain’s air suspension, you get a seriously lifted semi-monster.

The modifications required to carry the Portal axles include Jürgen’s new mounting points for the multi-link suspension and subframe grading, adjusting the rear axle support and modifying the axle kinematics to prevent everything from falling out at first glance in a corner . . The rest is standard E, and I mean standard: the car runs with the usual creature comforts and is perfect inside.

The interesting thing here is that an engineer from a different department (Jürgen’s original engineering responsibility at Mercedes was packaging the front end of the E-Class, basically making everything fit), was given some slack. He looked at the portal axles of the G-Wagen 4×4², bit a pencil and said, ‘Hmmm, I wonder?’

Apparently he asked if he could go and the Daimler bosses said yes. After a bit more conversation, he developed the idea of ​​actual technical specifications and a proper design brief (he’s an engineer, basically an artist, but with CAD), but Merc simply took a chance with enthusiastic and like-minded experts . So, a small team at skunkworks prototyped some parts, 3D printed some other parts, welded some custom subframes to Jürgen’s specifications, and the E-AT² was born. This is good. Some of the best cars ever invented come from after-hours project groups of engineers.

A carefully designed flight of fancy, it seems suspicious that it could be another limited edition recreation from Mercedes. There is nothing wrong with that.
