Lexus Rz 450e – 2023 Lexus RZ 450e Revealed With More Power Than Toyota bZ4X A full battery will last an estimated 225 miles.
Lexus was surprisingly generous in the build-up to the RZ’s reveal, as the teaser campaign showcased almost the entire thing. Nevertheless, we’ve been waiting for this day to come and reveal all the details about the classier alternative to the Toyota bZ4X. As you can see, it’s more than just swapping badges and breaks, as the top-of-the-line version has its own visual identity.

Where should we start? It has significantly less plastic body cladding compared to the bZ4X and its other sister model, the Subaru Solterra. The greenhouse is different because there is no solid glass behind the back door. Instead, Lexus decided to install a gloss black panel to allow for a “floating roof” effect. Speaking of which, the pillars are all black, so the side mirrors are positioned lower on the doors than on mechanically related SUVs.

A closer look reveals that the headlights have a different shape and the upper character lines are unique to the RZ. We could say the same about the design of the wheels placed inside the shiny black arches. As for the rear, the Lexus version has the slimmest derrière of the trio and a new take on the two-piece roof spoiler compared to equivalent Toyota and Subaru EVs. The two have tailgate badging, while the luxury alternative proudly wears the “LEXUS” lettering above the center of the light strip.
Once inside, the RZ 2023 has a familiar yoke, but the instrument panel behind it is exclusive to Lexus’ dedicated electric SUV. For example, the digital instrument panel is placed at a normal distance from the driver instead of being placed at the back as is the case on the bZ4X and Solterra. The 14-inch touchscreen is larger than the 12.3-inch infotainment of the other two models. There seem to be fewer hotkeys on the center console where the air vents are above the screen instead of below.
We’re pretty sure some people will find the position of the start/stop button a bit odd, to the left of the central air vents. Speaking of which, the side vents are positioned horizontally instead of vertically, and the “floating” console between the seats has fewer controls than what you’ll find in Toyota and Subaru models. Overall, the RZ’s cabin feels slightly more comfortable to sit in.
Like the Solterra, the RZ is four-wheel drive only and uses a setup labeled “Direct4.” However, the 450e has more power thanks to a front-mounted 150kW electric motor and an 80kW rear e-motor. In combination, the two give 230 kW, which is 308 hp. It represents a significant increase of 93 hp over the AWD-equipped Subaru and Toyota bZ4X with a total output of 215 hp.

While lesser electric SUVs have 249 lb-ft (336 Nm), the RZ tops those numbers at 321 lb-ft (435 Nm). A 71.4 kWh battery pack is carried over and Lexus estimates it has enough power for 225 miles (362 kilometers). By comparison, the AWD-equipped bZ4X can get 228 miles in XLE trim and 222 miles if you step up to the Limited. It’s the same story with the Solterra, offering 228 miles for the Premium model and 222 miles for the Limited and Touring.
The range depends on the equipment level, because the more expensive models have additional equipment and are a little heavier. More importantly, the top-of-the-line versions ride on larger wheels. In the case of the Lexus, the estimated 225 miles is for the US-spec RZ with 18-inch alloy wheels.
The 2023 RZ 450e should go on sale in North America by the end of the year. Pricing details haven’t been revealed yet, but you’ll pay more than you would for the $44,080 bZ4X XLE with AWD. We remind you that the Toyota in the better equipped Limited version with twin engines is sold for $46,700. That tells us a fully loaded RZ could hit the $50,000 mark before incentives. and do not include indirect incentives. Charging is possible with an ordinary wall socket or a charging station. Public charging is always done through a filling station. EV charging speed depends on the charging station (EVSE) used and the EV’s maximum charging capacity. The table below shows all possible options for charging the Lexus RZ 450e. Each option shows how quickly the battery can be charged from low to full.
Charging an electric vehicle in Europe varies by country. Some European countries mainly use a 1-phase connection to the grid, while other countries almost exclusively use a 3-phase connection. The table below shows all possible charging methods for the Lexus RZ 450e, but some charging methods may not be widely available in certain countries.

Fast charging enables longer trips by adding as much range as possible in the shortest amount of time. The charging power will decrease significantly after reaching 80% state of charge. A typical fast charge therefore rarely exceeds 80% SoC. The fast EV charging speed depends on the charger used and the maximum charging power the EV can handle. The table below shows all the details about the fast charging of the Lexus RZ 450e.

Actual charge rates may differ from the data shown due to factors such as outside temperature, battery condition and driving style. It offers a host of high-tech features and will add a new sporty steer-by-wire system option in the next year or two. But there are some drawbacks, most notably the electric crossover’s modest range, which ranges from 296 to 220 miles, depending on the package you choose.
With plans to fully “electrify” its lineup by 2030, Lexus has a gaping hole in need of a battery electric vehicle. The 2023 RZ 450e fills that gap and, for the most part, offers the kind of design and features that traditional Lexus buyers should appreciate. And it’s attracting the attention of tech enthusiasts with plans to add an additional control-by-wire system.
Lexus Rz 450e: Brand’s First Electric Vehicle Lands In The Crossover Sweet Spot
The RZ is based on the same platform as the Toyota bZ4X, but the Lexus crossover gets more features and improved power. Where it falls down, however, is on the front end of the range. At a maximum of 220 miles, it delivers the lowest range in a class that includes serious EV rivals such as the Audi Q4 e-tron, Volvo XC40 Recharge and Cadillac Lyriq. And that’s probably costing Lexus a lot of potential buyers.
In short: Lexus is finally getting into the EV game after focusing on hybrids and PHEVs. The 2023 Lexus RZ 450e is quiet, spacious, and full of features you’d expect from the Japanese luxury brand. It also plans to add a revolutionary wire-by-wire control system. However, the limited range is likely to be a drawback that many potential buyers simply won’t accept.
“This is a pivotal year for us,” said Greg Kitzens, general manager of Lexus Marketing, earlier this month when I invited a small group of automotive journalists to San Diego to test drive the new RZ 450e.
While there are many reasons why 2023 will be an important year for the Japanese luxury marque, perhaps none is more important than the launch of an all-electric crossover.

Taking a cue from its regular sibling, Toyota, Lexus has been early in the market with conventional hybrids and even offers several different plug-in packages on the latest generation RX crossover. But the 2023 Lexus RZ 450e marks its late entry into the nascent pure electric vehicle market.
Unlike some competitors, Lexus has not moved away from its well-known design language, and above all has improved the aerodynamics of the range increase. The RZ is even closer to home when it comes to the necessary luxury
