The LC500 convertible is one of those times when, every now and then, Lexus gets it right. Maybe even Lexus doesn’t really know when these moments are happening. Once the new LS sedan arrived and gave the Mercedes S-Class sleepless nights. A decade ago something called the LFA came along and rewrote the dream garage series around the world. And here it is: the LC500 convertible.

Great car treats. It is a machine to be enjoyed, desired and adored. Very soon, they just won’t be allowed to do it that way anymore.
So what we have is a soft version of the LC500 coupe. The LC Cabriolet is only available with a V8 engine: Lexus decided not to bother cutting the roof off the V6 hybrid version, as the batteries make packing into the folding roof unwieldy and the weight too much to contemplate. We’re not complaining – the V8 is an engine we want to listen to.
For the 2021 model year, all LCs received revised suspension settings, whether they had a roof or not. Here, chassis reinforcements and a soft-top mechanism push the LC500’s curb weight to the wrong side of two tonnes. Meanwhile, the naturally aspirated V8 (remember those?) displacing a glorious five liters, still makes 465 hp and 398 lb-ft. Not big numbers by modern standards, but that’s a very big heart.
Power goes to the rear wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission that’s clearly stolen from a mountain bike, but even with drive and Sport mode, there’s not much the LC500 convertible can do to encourage laps around the Nurburgring. It’s as traditional a roadster as Toyota’s luxury marque can get away with, and it’s a £90,000 proposition for fans of the German marque who write Lexus off as nothing more than a Prius with an angry job.

To that end, one of the only optional extras aside from the incredibly vibrant color palette is the Sport+ package. So what does that add? Ceramic brakes, maybe? A carbon fiber diffuser? no. Try neck warmers on the seats, upgraded leather upholstery and 21-inch wheels. Style, comfort and exclusivity. That’s what the LC500 Convertible is.
If you’re happy to ditch the mass of pushers, XXL wristwatches for BMW M8 convertibles and assorted Porsche 911s, read on. Fair warning: you might fall deeply in love.
Lexus freely admits that the LC exists primarily as a halo model, to pique your interest in the brand and perhaps make you consider the UX instead of the Audi Q3, or the ES instead of the 4 Series Gran Coupe that will never stop the sports car sales avalanche that is the Porsche 911. But that, in fact, is key to its alluring charm.
You probably won’t spot another one, and when you do, you’ll share the sign with your LC driver. You took the road less traveled, you thought to hell with depreciation. Yes, it’s a YOLO-Lexus.

While the coupe is arguably a better-proportioned design, the convertible suits the LC500’s personality, as all pretense of being an exceptional sports car is gone. It’s less a car you drive, more an object you experience. You might be more enthusiastic about sitting upright in one of these than doing 95 bare-chested in a Mercedes SL.
What’s more, the low-budget 275g/km non-hybrid V8 is about the least future-proof choice you can use to build a car, so even if you don’t get the badge, or the looks, or the interior, you have to respect the perfectionism. The crap that made this flagship happen because you’re going to miss cars like this when they’re gone, and that won’t be long.

I tested sedans and SUVs and luxury SUVs and hybrids. I enjoyed almost every one of them for many different reasons.
My first feelings and first impression when I saw this vehicle were exactly like that. Lexus has combined sleek and muscular styling with luxurious looks and services inside and out.
My test vehicle this week was a 2021 Lexus LC 500 Convertible in Ultra White with a Black Top. It did not disappoint.

If you hit the gas pedal hard from a dead stop, you can suddenly get a shot of adrenaline. You see, the LC 500 Convertible can do 0-60 in just 4.6 seconds (just a tenth of a second behind the Lexus RC F, which I’ve tested and written about before).
The maximum speed of the track is 100 km/h. This is a “nice to know” tidbit as opposed to “Jeff hit 168” Why didn’t I ask for the track.
This mighty feat of speed is largely thanks to the LC 500 Convertible’s 5.0-liter V8 engine, which produces 471 horsepower at 7,100 rpm and 398 lb.-ft. of torque @4, 800 rpm.
This muscular engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission as its driving partner. Accelerating from zero to your top driving speed barely allows the driver to feel the different shift points. So smooth and crispy.

Of course, you have manual transmissions if you want to simulate manual driving. The Sport S and Sport S+ driving modes take performance-oriented driving to “next-level status” with a more powerful powertrain.
Fuel estimates are 15 mpg city, 25 mpg combined, I think that’s reasonable fuel efficiency for this type of car plus I doubt many people are too concerned about mileage over other factors when looking at a $101,000 sport . car i drove the LC 500 convertible mostly aggressively and with gusto I averaged 17.9 combined for a week but I’m sure it would improve quite a bit with average driving habits.
The treatment was impressive. I found the Lexus to lean smoothly into country road bends. Active Cornering Assist gently activates the brakes on the inner wheels in all corners. This gives you a smooth, comfortable and “controlled” ride on almost all types of roads and driving conditions.
Now, if you want to have fun and open things up and slide a little, try turning off the traction control. This button is located in an odd but out-of-the-way place to the left of the steering wheel. Since the 2021 Lexus LC 500 Convertible is rear-wheel drive, turning off the traction control could allow for some drifting and sliding fun on dusty or snowy roads.

Although this luxury coupe is a hybrid of two car segments, the LC 500 is more luxurious than sporty when it comes to ride and ride comfort. This is an advantage.

My test vehicle was Ultra White, but the LC 500 Convertible is also offered in Liquid Platinum, Atomic Silver, Flare Yellow, Infrared, Smoky Granite Mica, Caviar, Obsidian, Nightfall Mica, Cadmium Orange and Nori Green Pearl.
The LC 500 comes with a hard top or soft top with convertible top. Mine was a soft black sheet, but you can also get it in a sand color.
The sunroof can be opened and closed in about 15 seconds. It’s an easy and smooth process that can be done at up to 31 miles per hour. It works – I tried it. Elegant graphics on the multi-information display inform you about the status of opening and closing operations. After all, we don’t want this process to stop halfway with the top half. it won’t be good.
Front features include a long but symmetrical graphite-colored shaft-shaped front grille. The grill didn’t bother me at all despite its size. It has a long front end, and the pivoting grille complements it well.
