Lexus Es 300h – New 2022 Lexus ES 300h Review The updates are a welcome addition, but the Lexus ES still lags behind its class leaders where it arguably matters most: the powertrain.
The Lexus ES has always had two areas where it stands out from its main rivals: a weak powertrain and a mediocre infotainment system. The introduction of a touchscreen for this upgraded model has helped solve one of these issues, but the unchanged hybrid system looks anemic next to the BMW 520d, which could be at least as effective in the real world. It’s a small improvement, and the finances are favorable, but not enough to see the ES become a credible competitor to the best in class.

The Lexus ES is often overlooked in the mid-size driver segment. And you can’t really blame buyers for that; when it goes up against competition as talented as the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Mercedes E-Class – not to mention newcomers like the Genesis G80. Lexus has overall lacked enough positives, especially when it has always had two main weaknesses.

But now the ES has had a facelift and many areas of its cabin have been tweaked in hopes of closing the gap on the class leaders.
From the outside, there is little distinction between old and new. There’s a new insert for that huge grille, aside from the F Sport car we have here, which still looks the same, and there are a few new wheel designs.
The headlights also became thinner and new “three-eye” LED units appeared. The top-of-the-line Takumi is standard equipment and available on the rest of the model range via optional upgrade packages. They are said to provide a much wider field of vision at night. We didn’t have the old and new for a direct comparison, but they give a great view of the future in the dark.
The most notable and welcome upgrade comes as the 12.3-inch infotainment screen now benefits from touchscreen technology. This alone is a huge improvement because it means you’ll never have to go near the nasty touchpad input system on the center console (which is still there).

But the latest update still feels like a halfway house. Having tried the brilliant system fitted to the latest NX SUV, the graphics and interface of this system still seem dated and are clearly no longer the best Lexus can do. At least Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are integrated into the setup.
Aside from a few new color options and a larger brake pedal, there’s not much new inside. In other words, the ES 300h’s cabin is beautifully finished, but not as spacious in the rear as most alternatives, particularly in terms of headroom.
However, the changes brought by the 300h go beyond aesthetics. Changes to the rear triangle braces made them stiffer and increased torsional resistance, which would make the car more stable, especially on the fast lane. The wider range of damping force is made possible by the revised internals of the adaptive units fitted to the F Sport.
The ES was already above the class average in terms of ride and handling compromises, and while the changes aren’t revolutionary, it can cover rougher, undulating tarmac without the chewiness experienced in the Mercedes Class E – especially on models. . on larger wheels. It’s also quite lively through corners, although it still can’t match the BMW 5 Series’ blend of unstable stability and well-balanced chassis.

Although subtle improvements are evident throughout, the key lies under the hood. The hybrid system consists of a 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle gasoline engine, an electric motor and a small battery, with drive sent to the front wheels via an E-CVT gearbox.
The main problem is that it feels a little lacking compared to its rivals’ turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. A 0-60 mph time of 8.9 seconds looks good on paper, but the way it’s achieved – along with the rumble of the engine working hard as the engine revs don’t match the increase in road speed – even allows you to get closer to this figure. little unpleasant.
This could be forgiven if the system achieved fuel economy stats similar to the Prius, but those numbers are rather insignificant. Our time with the car resulted in mpg figures around the 42 mpg mark – not bad at all for a car of this size, but some rivals’ traditional diesel variants can at least match that figure and do it quicker too . .
The ES received a five-star Euro NCAP rating in 2018 testing, but Lexus has improved its crash prevention technology. The autonomous braking system can now detect cyclists during the day and pedestrians at night, and warn the driver of traffic and people when turning at an intersection. Other changes include a revised lane-keeping system, while cruise control can adjust speed when approaching corners.

Unlike other left-wing competitors like the DS 9, the ES is at least on the right foot on price, beating out its established rivals. Drop £5,000 for an ES 300h F Sport (without the optional Takumi pack) and a three-year PCP contract with an annual limit of 10,000 miles is £482 a month. In contrast, a BMW 520d M Sport costs £539 per month on corresponding terms. Add to that the excellent reliability and high level of service from the Lexus dealer network, and for some, that will be enough to change their mind.
There are also cheaper options below. The standard ES range starts at £37,105, although this is a model without navigation. The most expensive option in the range is the Takumi version, which costs £52,255 with optional digital door mirrors.

The 2.5-liter gasoline engine features rapid combustion technology, making it one of the most thermally efficient engines ever built. The result is more power without increasing emissions or fuel consumption. Features that help achieve these results include straight intakes, increased valve angles and laser-finished valve seats. A variable displacement oil pump, multi-hole injectors and VVT-iE on the intake valves contribute to its world-class performance.
Designed to seamlessly blend power from the electric motor/generator and the 2.5-liter engine, this transmission uses a multi-axis arrangement of the electric motors to reduce the overall length of the transmission. For greater directivity and compactness, the traditional planetary transmission is replaced by a parallel shaft gear and a multifunction gear.
The nickel-metal hydride battery, designed for the life of the car, which drives the electric motor and stores the energy generated during driving and braking, is placed under the rear seat. This is possible thanks to the minimization of the battery height and the introduction of a more compact cooling system. This positioning means more luggage space and better weight distribution for better handling.
ES’s Road Sign Assist (RSA) system recognizes road signs and provides the driver with information on the multi-information display. Coupled with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), the vehicle’s speed settings can be quickly reset to the speed limit detected by the RSA.
