The i7 is BMW’s sixth pure electric car, albeit under the guise of an all-new 7 Series. That’s right: instead of the departure of an electric luxury sedan like the Mercedes EQS or Porsche Taycan, the i7 arrived at the same time as the regular new 7 Series range. In fact, it actually arrived in the UK before petrol, diesel and hybrids, and at the time of writing in 2023, the i7 is still the current generation 7 Series.

However, the rules have changed and the electric i7 takes center stage as BMW reimagines the luxury car experience with its new OS8 software and standard-setting stability with interior well-being, class-leading digital experiences. Oh, and a huge 31.3-inch panoramic TV (“theater”) screen that folds out of the roof for rear-seat passengers. Everyone was very satisfied with it. Who knows, a car might even be good.

Undoubtedly, BMW has committed itself to a new design philosophy. Some critics — I mean, practically the entire Internet — think the new 7 Series is yet another proof that BMW has lost its mind (or nice words about it). In motion, it works. No, actually. In white, all the shiny bits in glossy black, or completely “killed” in matte paint, it’s modern and counterintuitive, inappropriate. The M Sport Package Pro adds 21-inch alloy wheels and larger brakes (19-inch wheels are standard, but less powerful). Think all new cars are the same? Not here, no.

This massive grill lights up at night and the overhead lights are the focal point with a Swarovski crystal ‘Iconic Glow’ option. This face is literally in your face. Low- and high-beam headlights are lowered into the front apron; Adaptive LEDs are static. The new 7 series will include a Coldplay concert.

Oddly enough, it’s the split-level lights and brick front that don’t bother us, it’s the rear where the new 7 Series loses its credibility and becomes strangely generic. The E65 iteration of the Rumbus 2001 was the paradox of the day.

Although it’s big in all dimensions and has an unobstructed look, the new 7 Series is aerodynamically efficient only on its long wheelbase. That’s important in the powertrain world, where smoothness equals performance, and the i7’s drag coefficient is just 0.24. Aero was a big thing in car design in the early eighties. We will now focus on the i7. The mid-range xDrive60 has a combined 536 horsepower from two electric motors, with very similar hardware to the top iX SUV. The front engine produces 255 horsepower, the rear 308 horsepower, and a total torque of 549 lb-ft. And no, it doesn’t quite add up: “The system’s total power output depends on all the components of the electric drivetrain and cannot simply be added together,” says BMW. Estimated 0-62km/h time is 4.7 seconds and top speed is limited to 149mph.

Other i7 engines include the entry-level, rear-wheel drive eDrive50 with 449bhp or the all-out M70 xDrive, which gets 650bhp and 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds. It’s basically a mobile theater that goes as fast as a V12-powered Lamborghini Murcielago. 

So, as you might have guessed, progress continues in terms of powertrain evolution, and we’re now approaching the fifth generation of BMW powertrains. The drive units are compact and carefully integrated, and BMW says the charging software is improved over the i4 saloon and iX. Battery temperature is now more precisely controlled for improved performance and a smoother charging curve. Battery cooling is also optimized and custom charging settings can be saved for specific charging points. You can manually preheat the battery when you go to the fast charger. BMW says it has eliminated the need for rare earth metals in the rotor because the motor uses an electrically induced synchronous motor, rather than a motor with fixed permanent magnets.

The lithium-ion battery pack in each i7 provides 101.7kWh of usable power, and the cell is only 110mm tall, sitting comfortably under the floor. Interestingly, the range is clear on the twin-engine xDrive60, with the BMW claiming 387 miles on a full charge. The company has worked to keep the range of best and worst case scenarios close to each other, which is a valuable USP. Find a 195kW fast charger and BMW says you can add 106 miles in 10 minutes. This is an important energy surge in the real world.

China is its biggest sales region, and the average age of owners there – 95 percent – ​​is 38, compared to 56 in the US and 57 in Europe. Keep these things in mind when looking for a new car.

When the latest 7 first arrived, the answer to that question was “tough luck”. But now you are very spoiled for choice. We haven’t got all the ICE engines available in the UK, but you can still choose between the 750e xDrive and the M760e xDrive. Both are plug-in hybrids with straight-six petrol engines, but while the former makes 483bhp and 516lb ft of torque, the latter gets 563bhp and 590lb ft.

And it’s a car with real character, which is a major achievement. BMWs have always relied on their great engines for soul and we all crave, as well as feel, their dynamics, but the focus has now shifted elsewhere. The new 7 Series is the world’s best interior, beautifully executed, well-crafted and imaginative. You can argue with each other about the exterior design, but the inside is a knockout.
