Bmw X7 M60i – You don’t know a car until you bump into it on the road. This has always been our mantra and we practice it as much as possible with everything we drive and write about. And for us, the ultimate road trip usually consisted of a few days, amazing scenery, challenging routes and something active along the way. So a plan was hatched to go from Chicago to Yellowstone, up to Montana and back. Me, my two boys and lots of hiking and camping gear. We needed to find the ultimate road trip car.

Given the length of the trip and the state of the charging infrastructure in the US, we couldn’t go electric. And knowing that we’d be off-road every now and then and a hatch would come in handy, one of BMW’s SAVs (crossovers) made the most sense.

The X3 is more economical and rewarding to drive, but with two of us 6’2″ it wouldn’t be the most comfortable choice. The X5 could easily have been a sweet spot, but we had our eyes on what we we’ll call it the ultimate road trip car. 

The New Bmw X7

The first X7 with a true M engine, the BMW X7 M60i has 523 hp (5500-6000 rpm) and 553 lb⋅ft (at 1800-4600 rpm) that motivates the M60i 5,895 lbs to 60 mph at just 60 mph Considering the size and the weight of the X7 that is felt very quickly.

In a move likely to allow for further power bumps, this engine has been dropped from the 617bhp in the current M5 Competition and is identical in power to the V8 without the M engine that was in the pre-LCI X7 50i. So what’s the difference? Significantly faster responsiveness, faster revs and a wider power and torque band. Oh and it also starts in traditional M mode – aggressively loud.

Also new to the M60i is a revised suspension, M exhaust, M composite brakes and a host of M styling accents. The result is an interesting dichotomy between a large luxury crossover and a muscle car. Fortunately, the latter only appears when called upon, making the M60i supple and ultimately livable.

The 2023 BMW X7 is a complete refresh of an already successful product. Just three years into its life cycle, the X7 has exceeded BMW’s sales expectations and at times flirted with the MINI brand’s total US sales. But BMW is constantly moving and evolving as a brand. One of those more recent evolutions was a push towards luxury and the separation of the higher end segments from its smaller, more affordable products. And part of that is creating a unique face of luxury and sophistication. Follow the 2023 BMW X7.

The front fascia is a big change. But personally, the size of the car along with the size of the front end changed our immediate impressions. In short, the new look works on the X7 mainly because it’s such a big vehicle and one that’s inherently extroverted. The new design actually has the effect of shrinking the front of the car in height and seems to give it a more angular and emotional look. While it won’t be to everyone’s taste, this new direction for the X7 is truly a personal best.

Inside the most notable addition is the IX’s large dual curved screen design. But look beyond that and you’ll see that the BMW goes further than most LCIs. There is a completely redesigned ventilation system, as well as redesigned upper air ducts and speaker grills as well. It’s a mix of minimalism with (to our eyes) dodgy designs and flashy shapes that suggest BMW is going a little too far. 

The revised X7 features many of the mistakes of the BMW XI in removing physical buttons and moving functionality to the screen. The result is a car that is more difficult to use with borderline dangerous characteristics to engage while driving.

The worst part of the new X7 is the new BMW OS which is very complicated and the main functions are now part of sub-menus. Heated and cooled seats and heated steering wheel now live in a confusing and charming interface that is itself inside the “climate” menu in the new BMW OS. A function like massaging a seat was a click of a physical button. Now you need a click of a haptic button on the door (did it click?) and a menu at the top and then a slide of a digital key. The time and cognitive load required isn’t huge, but multiply that by the handful of features used every day and you have a machine that’s harder to use than before.

Even worse, they (for some reason) often save your last setting making it even more important to turn them on and off quickly.

It may sound pedantic, but any attention paid to overly complex interfaces and not on the road is nothing short of a distraction and ultimately dangerous.

Fortunately the criticism ends there as the interior is generally outstanding throughout. In addition to the sluggish engines that power and raise the 3rd row, the X7’s interior offered exceptional comfort and utility on our ride. 

The ride itself was as epic as you can imagine. Our first day was long, driving out of Chicago, through Wisconsin, Minnesota, finally stopping in the middle of South Dakota. It helps 9.5 hours of driving with the massage and cooling function turned to maximum in both front seats. Like the assisted steering function. Unfortunately, due to supply chain issues, this early production LCI X7 lacked the new Highway Assist feature and was only offered up to 40 mph hands-free. Although this feature could not be used on motorways, the Active Driving Assistant did much the same, although hands had to be on the wheel at all times.

It might not sound like full self-driving, but having a car that takes most of the cognitive load out of small corrections and gentle cornering really helps when you’re driving for 8-9 hours a day.

The seats at the front included heating, cooling and massage functions – the last two were almost 100% of the team. Although the latest generation of massaging seats found in the new 7 Series have increased the output intensity, everything helps when you’re going from tank to tank and sitting still for hours at a time.

You notice two things immediately when we arrive at the legendary Big Horns. First, the massive torque of this M-derived engine means the X7 M60i has no lift or line to contend with. Second, you can only hide 5,895 pounds for so long when you’re on challenging mountain roads. The sheer mass of the X7 meant the car had to be pushed in and out of corners with care and a lot of consideration for what was to come. Although the engineers have gotten more feedback than you’d expect through the steering wheel, you don’t get the kind of connection to the road and even a chassis that inspires confidence that cars are truly the best at providing them.

As our second day came to an end, we pulled into Cody Wyoming, an old cowboy town founded by showman Buffalo Bill. Drawing on the town’s history, we stayed at Hotel Irma, the original hotel founded by Buffalo Bill. The town was just what we were looking for and we ended the night getting more insight into the world of rodeo from some locals at the hotel’s famous bar.

It is difficult to describe Yellowstone National Park in a few words. We can tell you that we saw five bears in two days (four of them grizzlies) and we got caught in a Buffalo stampede at 11:00 PM at night. But none of them do Yellowstone the justice it deserves.

Yellowstone Park is in the heart of the Rocky Mountains and has stunning scenery that seems endless. Giant snow-capped peaks rise above wide valleys with lush meadows. It seems like almost every example of interesting landforms on earth could fit impossibly within its 3,471 square miles.

Majestic waterfalls cascade down rugged cliffs through an almost eternal rainbow. Geothermal wonders abound, with bubbling hot springs, boiling mud pots and the iconic eruption of Old Faithful geyser, reminding us of the eternal power of the Earth. The ethereal beauty of Yellowstone National Park, with its untamed wilderness and extraordinary geology, is a testament to nature’s majesty and an invitation to immerse yourself in its wonder.

The downside of this is that other people are also aware of the natural splendor of this place. And as crazy as it sounds, that means traffic. I used Active Driving Assist liberally in more congested areas where slow-moving traffic and stop-and-go were common. However, this does not mean that there are not many otherworldly modes.
