I am both a musician and an engineer. As a classically trained concert pianist, I studied composition, electronic music and engineering. I have a PhD in electronic engineering and architectural acoustics. I have always been interested in how sound works on a physical, technical and psychological level. In 2015, BMW Group wanted me to become an acoustic engineer. I see the car as a very complex performance art. Two and a half years later, I was responsible for developing sounds for our electric cars as part of the design department. Today, my role is Creative Director of Sound Design, responsible for the design aesthetics of BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce.

Sound is essential to the driving experience. In the past, noise was associated with the combustion engine. With EVs, we wanted to define a new sonic identity for the company. “What does a BMW look like?” Part of our basic research was to find out who we are, who we are and where we will be in the future. All this needs to be conveyed in voice without any explanation. Over the past 5-10 years, sound has become an integral part of the user experience, and we offer many driving sounds (My Mode) and daytime warning sounds. I have created over 50 sound constellations, some of which can be as short as a few milliseconds.

Sound is an important part of development from day one. Today we have the ability to create sounds that we did not have before, but we need to know what kind of machine it will be. I have discussions with my colleagues about the car’s exterior and interior design, lighting and materials. I translated all the sketches, mood boards and sound sketches, so everything in the car is on the same page. The company considers sound as a very important element. Since BMW is an emotional brand, we cannot do without sound to convey the joy of driving.

People can express themselves through the machine to express their feelings. Finally, I believe that the driver should be seen as a performer, translator, and composer.

Taking this concept further with the BMW Vision Neue Klasse X, we introduce a new feature called the HYPERSONX WHEEL. This digital feature allows passengers to have their own personal favorite soundtrack. In 2022, we collaborated with two-time Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer to create BMW IconicSounds Electric. We talked about ideas and beliefs about how a car should behave and what we can bring from the past to the future in musical traditions.

Hans wrote a piece, and I discovered what these sound elements “hidden” inside. I recreated this piece and became the voice of a driver. The result was a first in the automotive industry where we have audio components that go up (high tones) and down (low tones) at the same time.
