Bmw X1 – In one word – this engine is “acceptable” or I can say “likeable”. It’s mostly silent unless pressed hard, which makes sweet noises.

Considering it’s been 6 solid years of owning the Jeep Compass, the itch to finally upgrade is starting to hit. I’ve taken the time to try viable options and generally drive different cars (ahem, SUVs) to get the hang of it. the latest and greatest money can buy if you are willing to invest around 55-60 lakh INR at this time.

Given that the X1 is the latest offering from the Bavarian automaker, which is likely to remain its flagship and mass-selling product for at least a year or two, getting it for a test drive could be an uphill battle. D-day arrived and the dark gray diesel X1 drove up to my house for the long-awaited test drive. The salesman tried to enter their showroom, but realized that it was better to leave the customer alone with him.

New Bmw X1

Let’s agree that the latest X1 looks nice. I would even say that it is so well made that this design will age well and continue to delight onlookers. It looks mature and big enough for an X1, but is still manoeuvrable and nimble for getting around town.

The wow factor continues in the interiors, with the new floating armrest and larger screen creating a future-ready design. The ergonomics are top notch and you generally get your money’s worth. The roof lining is black, and the overall dark color palette made the cabin not too airy. The cushioning of the seat is firmer and some may not like it. As I know for a fact, that hard seat cushion is a hard sell to the people in my house who will likely abandon this vehicle immediately because it is “uncomfortable”. Also, the Harmon Kardon sound system gets the job done and has plenty of power. Last but not least, the driver’s seat massage function is a welcome addition. The trunk is well shaped and can easily accommodate small luggage of 4 members.

I don’t even want to start a discussion about why they chose the 1.5 liter turbo petrol engine. This is completely unacceptable and unworthy by any stretch of the imagination. While I hope they would cast spells to mask the brute force numbers, I find it unlikely that this would make up for the lack of displacement. This is a bit sad for me as I was looking for a petrol powered vehicle, mainly for quiet operation with no vibrations. This variant is not yet available for test driving and will not arrive until June 23rd. Now we come to the 2 liter diesel engine that I drove. In one word – this engine is “acceptable” or I can say “likeable”. It’s mostly quiet unless you press it hard, which makes some sweet noises, but overall it definitely gets the job done and feels normal. I did not feel that the transmission was as fast as, say, the Compass (BS IV manual variant). But yes, this engine and TC transmission work well for an effortless experience. The steering is precise (but not too directly connected to the road) and measures speed well and is nimble at lower speeds in the city. This is clearly the best engine for IMO. I cannot leave out the gearbox which made a more accurate and neat addition to the cabin than the old gearboxes.

The suspension was as firm as expected, but still not bone-crushing. That’s totally acceptable in my books. But I didn’t like the way it took on the deeper holes. In the cabin, the rumble can definitely be heard, and even less felt. Also, surprisingly, a little too much road noise seeped into the cabin, forcing me to ask the dealer twice if BMW still uses run-flat tires. I got a negative response, which made me wonder if the wheel arch insulation was suboptimal.

With the recent price hike, this SUV might leave you a little unhappy with your down payment. While the BMW faithful insist that a car should drive well and not be a gadget showroom on wheels, we all now appreciate the help of the latest gadgets. The lack of a 360 degree camera is almost criminal in my opinion in this otherwise well covered car. No, I won’t even mention the seat ventilation because it is unimaginable for a BMW in this price range, and also in the next segment, namely the X3. Other than these, I don’t want to list the missing features on this otherwise well put together car.

Because of this generally satisfactory experience with the BMW, I decided to try the GLA as well and compare the two. I felt the GLA was a little too closed and connected to the engine, probably due to its DCT transmission. There was never a free flow, and the constant hum of the engine met a receptive audience in the cabin. The steering is pretty good, nothing to write home about, typical Merc in that regard. The suspension soaked up the potholes much better than our new Bimmer and the ride was generally pleasant. I felt the cabin was mostly well appointed and par for the course.

After test driving two of the most durable Jeep upgrade options, I’m a little confused and would like you all to chime in with your thoughts. Both the cars disappointed me, asking around INR 58-62 lakh on-road. Heck, the latest Compass Model S isn’t too far behind these German super models. Should I even be thinking about switching to another Jeep – I just don’t know. I also tried with the Hyundai Tuscon, but I can’t figure it out with the design. I’m looking forward to getting to know the Kodiaq, but Škoda as a brand still doesn’t seem very reliable to me. Please tell me what you think. With more than a century of history, BMW is synonymous with luxury. In different car segments, the brand has demonstrated its ability to adapt to the latest designs and dynamics of the automotive industry. However, the BMW X1 is no exception. As the smallest model in the SAV series, the X1 offers a practical, comfortable and sporty driving experience.
