Audi A7 – 2020 Audi A7 Sportback E Quattro PHEV debuts with 25-mile EV range The TFSI 55 e quattro delivers a total of 362 horsepower in the elegant S line.
We’ve enjoyed the sleek styling of the Audi A7 Sportback for several years. Keeping with the times, Audi now offers the four-door as a plug-in hybrid. Meet the A7 Sportback 55 TFSI e quattro. I’ll just call it e quattro because the name is so catchy.
Audi A7
The biggest difference between this model and the standard A7 is obviously the electrified powertrain. The e quattro uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an output of 248 hp (185 kW) and a single electric motor with a maximum output of 141 hp (105 kW). Through the collaboration, Audi demonstrates the e quattro’s total output of 362 horsepower (270 kilowatts) and 369 pound-feet (500 newton-meters) of torque. Power is sent reliably to all four wheels, with a 7-speed S tronic gearbox handling shifting duties.
Audi A7: 40 Interior Photos
With everything set to maximum, the A7 Sportback e quattro reaches 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. To put it bluntly, it will reach an electronically limited 155 mph (250 km/h), but we suspect the typical e quattro buyer will be more interested in electric performance. For this purpose, the e Quattro’s battery pack stores 14.1 kWh of electricity at 381 V. Nestled neatly under the rear cargo area without sacrificing interior space, the unit can electrically power the A7 for approximately 25 miles at speeds of up to 135 km/h (84 mph).
Audi fits the e quattro with three driving modes. EV mode is the default setting and is how the A7 starts up every day. Battery hold mode keeps the battery charged at its current level for future use of the electric vehicle. Hybrid mode uses both the gasoline engine and electric motor to maximize performance and efficiency. The A7 also utilizes the automaker’s predictive driving control to extract every ounce of performance and fuel efficiency from its e quattro system. If external power is required, the battery can be fully charged in 2.5 hours using a 400V, 3-phase CEE industrial outlet. Charging at 230V at home takes about 7 hours.
Externally, the A7 e Quattro applies the S line exterior package and is equipped with 19-inch wheels. Audi’s virtual cockpit with matrix LED headlights, sports seats and plug-in hybrid screen are also standard equipment.
Going hybrid isn’t cheap. The 2020 A7 Sportback e quattro starts at €77,850 in Germany, which is equivalent to $86,098 in U.S. currency. It is reported that the market launch will begin in the third quarter of 2019, but it is not yet known whether it will be released in the North American market.
Audi Debuts The Next Generation A7
Audi is systematically pursuing its electrification strategy and is now introducing a large four-door coupe with a powerful and efficient PHEV. Intelligent drive management with predictive operating strategies enables high electric range, low fuel consumption and dynamic performance. The new Audi A7 Sportback 55 TFSI e quattro combines all these features with a system output of 270 kW (367 PS) (combined fuel consumption (l/100 km*): 2.1 – 1.9 (112.0 – 123.8 US mpg), total electricity consumption (kWh) )/100km*: 18.1 – 17.5 combined CO
Emissions (g/km*): 48 – 44 (77.2 – 70.8 g/mi). An extensive standard equipment list with the S Line exterior package and sports suspension completes the sporty look.
The drivetrain of the new plug-in hybrid Audi A7 Sportback 55 TFSI e quattro consists of a turbocharged 2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with outputs of 185 kW (252 PS) and 370 Nm.
). The permanently excited synchronous motor (PSM) has a maximum power of 105 kW and a maximum torque of 350 Nm.

. It is integrated into the 7-speed S tronic with a disengaging clutch and uses Ultra technology to transfer drive torque to the Quattro Ultra drivetrain. Total system power is 270 kW (367 PS). Maximum torque 500Nm
. Plug-in hybrid models are corporate cars and have an electric range of more than 40 km in the WLTP cycle, so they are subject to a lower tax rate in Germany.
The lithium-ion battery consists of 104 pouch cells and stores 14.1 kWh of energy at a rated voltage of 381 V under the boot floor. For optimal temperature control, the cooling loop is connected to both a coolant loop for the temperature control system and a low-temperature cooling loop with integrated electric motors and power electronics.
The lithium-ion battery is integrated under the rear trunk floor of the vehicle, leaving no gaps in the trunk. Therefore, the maximum usable storage capacity with the rear seats folded is 1,235 liters.
The Audi A7 Sportback 2024
In general, the Audi A7 Sportback 55 TFSI e** is also equipped with high-tech quattro all-wheel drive. The rear axle is activated very quickly and predictably when required. Recovery of electrical energy always takes place via the front axle. Therefore, the overall concept of the Quattro all-wheel drive concept and the A7 PHEV are identical in terms of performance and efficiency. With the four-door Gran Turismo, Audi is the only premium manufacturer to offer an all-wheel drive plug-in hybrid in direct competition.
The driving concept of the A7 Sportback 55 TFSI e quattro is designed to help customers get the most out of everyday electric driving. It offers either zero local emissions in cities or high mileage on long distance trips. The combination of an electric motor and an internal combustion engine provides a sporty and dynamic driving experience. Equipped with three different driving modes, the plug-in hybrid is easy to operate even in everyday use.
The A7 PHEV starts in EV mode by default. This means that the car will only run on electricity unless the driver presses the accelerator pedal past a variable and noticeable pressure point. EV mode is set as the default setting every time you start the vehicle. In the second driving mode, Battery Hold mode, the driving management system maintains the battery capacity at the current level, so that, for example, a defined distance can be driven fully electric at a later date.
Hybrid mode is activated automatically with route guidance from the navigation system or by the driver using the operating mode button. In this mode, the A7 PHEV uses the interaction between the electric motor and internal combustion engine to complete as many driving segments as possible electrically, thus minimizing total fuel consumption at the end of the trip. For example, most stop-and-go traffic in cities could be electric. Depending on the situation, the system chooses between freewheeling with the engine off and freewheel recovery. The latter allows you to recover up to 35 kW of power. The electric motor is responsible for all light braking up to 0.1 g, i.e. most braking in everyday driving. At decelerations of up to 0.2 g, up to 80 kW of electrical energy is generated through brake regeneration.

To maximize efficiency, the A7 uses Predictive Driving Control, a predictive driving strategy. The system uses information from the predictive efficiency assistant, also found in other Audi midsize and full-size models, to control the electric motor, lithium-ion battery and internal combustion engine.
If route guidance is activated in the MMI navigation system, the predictive operating strategy controls the drivetrain to drive exclusively on electricity for the last urban part of the route, and the Audi A7 PHEV arrives at its destination with a nearly empty running battery. As the A7 Sportback TFSI e approaches the city, cruise control recharges the battery so you can drive the last part of the city electrically. This allows drivers to use all their electrical energy when entering the city, driving with zero local emissions.
Drive management is controlled based on large amounts of data. Predictive operational strategies use two types of data: near-field information and route information for approximate and accurate route planning. The rough plan is based on accurate information about the immediate surroundings from online traffic information, distance to destination, route profile of the selected route, speed limits, road types, etc. and navigation data.
Uphill and downhill slopes and up-to-date data from onboard sensors. Therefore, the rough planning of the driving controller is mainly based on route information along the driving route, such as traffic flow, terrain, and road type. The precise planning by which the A7 controls the driving controller in the current driving situation is carried out by the Predictive Efficiency Assistant (PEA), which is featured in other Audi mid- to large-size models.
What We’re Driving: 2019 Audi A7 Quattro
Predictive Efficiency Assist adapts recovery behavior to the relevant driving situation when coasting. It uses predictable route data from the navigation database and uses camera and radar signals to monitor the distance to the vehicle in front. Depending on the situation, the system predictively chooses between coasting with the engine off and coasting recovery (recovering kinetic energy and converting it to electrical energy).
